Flying and I have never been friends. I have lost sleep and sanity because I have been so lost in anxiety over an upcoming flight. I have taken anxiety meds, begged whoever is flying with me to talk to me, and held onto the armrest as if that death grip was the only thing keeping me safe. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• In the past several years, I have been working to walk in the authority I know is mine. It’s been a journey. Then this trip, I flew fearlessly. So much that the person I was flying with asked what changed because he had noticed how laid back I was. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• As we boarded one if our flights, there was a sweet girl in front of us. She couldn’t have been more than 4 years old. About every 3 minutes, she would say “are we about to take off?” and her Grandma would say “not yet, but soon!” The little girl would almost burst each time as she said “it’s going to be so fun!” •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• It seems that God always speaks to me on planes, and this time was no different. As I was thinking about how much I had let fear steal, I asked the Lord to restore what’s been lost. Then... we had the sweetest conversation. One of those that left it’s mark on my heart. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• When the flight landed I couldn’t help but think about how many special talks I have had with Jesus in the air. He’s met me every time without fail. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• It’s so sweet that one of the things that has terrified me for so long... is something I could look forward to because I can confidently expect Him to meet me. How fun to walk into my next flight thinking “Are we taking off? This book is pretty far out of my “normal” reading wheel... but I am so thankful I challenged myself and read it. This book is about learning how to appreciate those you work with or volunteer with....basically have any kind of professional relationship with. I know I could for sure do better in that department!! ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Many of us have heard of the “Five Love Languages”, but in this book the authors take it to a new level! They share how to use the 5 languages of appreciation to encourage and thank those around us. It really opened my eyes to so much! There are portions of this book that are for sure written for employers and supervisors, but don’t let that stop you from reading it! This book is Brian Johnson’s testimony. In it, he shares pieces of his childhood, his marriage, his journey building Bethel Music and his struggle with anxiety. Through his testimony, Brian shares how worship has been his lifeline and how he learned to slow down and rely solely on God. This book encouraged my heart. I read it right on time. It’s not a book filled with “how-to” ways to beat panic... but it’s a testimony to hold on to. This year I am following a bible reading plan. I have been enjoying it. The “type a” part of me loves a plan and loves to keep track of my progress. But then this week happened... ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Life flipped our normal routine upside down. So... I got behind on my reading plan. Many days without little check marks overwhelmed me. I was guilty and filled with shame because I had gotten behind. I wanted to quit, because obviously I couldn’t keep up with a reading plan. So this morning, I told myself before I could do anything else... I had to get caught up. I felt like a child sitting in the corner when I first opened up my bible. ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• But... here’s the thing... there was nothing about getting caught up that felt like punishment. Have you ever gone a few days without speaking to your best friend and then when you finally see them you feel like all is right in the world? That’s how my heart felt this morning! I have heard (and said) for years the Bible isn’t a “should do”... it’s a must do for survival. It’s like eating, breathing or sleeping. However, this year, more then ever... I’m recognizing that this is where I go to meet my best friend. •••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• Today, I wanted to encourage you... if you are like me and have missed a few days with Jesus... make time today. Don’t worry about how many boxes you haven’t marked off in your reading plan... just open up the word and prepare to meet Him. It’s not about perfection... it’s about progress. Psalm 19:7-10 says this: “The instruction of the Lord is perfect, renewing one’s life; the testimony of the Lord is trustworthy, making the inexperienced wise. The precepts of the Lord are right, making the heart glad; the command of the Lord is radiant, making the eyes light up. The fear of the Lord is pure, enduring forever; the ordinances of the Lord are reliable and altogether righteous. They are more desirable than gold — than an abundance of pure gold; and sweeter than honey dripping from a honeycomb.”
